New Haven County Marc A. Veturis, 29, of Waterbury, pleaded guilty on Thursday, March 28, to multiple felonies linked to the shooting, the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said.

The charges come from a Hampshire County incident on Mill Valley Road in Hadley.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported at the time that the victim, a 59-year-old Hadley business owner, had gone out into the road to help what seemed like a broken-down car, but when he went to attach jumper cables to the vehicle, Veturis pulled a gun and tried to push him inside.

The victim fought back, and Veturis fired "point blank" and struck the man in the shoulder/upper chest area, the prosecutor said. He kept firing as the man ran away.

Veturis jumped back into the car and floored it back to Waterbury, where he was later arrested thanks to the descriptions given to police by multiple witnesses who called 911, the prosecutor said.

Veturis admitted to charges of:

  • Armed assault with intent to murder
  • Assault and battery by discharging a firearm
  • Attempted kidnapping while armed with a firearm
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm
  • Unlawful possession of ammunition
  • Unlawful possession of a loaded firearm
  • Transporting a firearm into Massachusetts for use in a criminal act

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Suhl requested a 10 to 12-year prison sentence, citing Veturis' lack of remorse in his phone calls from jail.

Veturis admitted that he targeted the victim because of an incident between his former girlfriend and the victim that transpired in 2000, the prosecutor said.
